Breast cancer screening at Dr. Rose Private Hospital

Interview

In Hungary, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and the most important tool in the fight against breast cancer is regular screening. Regular screening plays a key role, as diseases diagnosed in time have a better chance of being cured and complications can be prevented. At Dr. Rose Private Hospital, we pay special attention to prevention, i.e., disease prevention and early detection. The most important information about breast cancer screening is summarized here by Dr. Ildikó Németh, chief physician and head of the hospital's radiology department.

In breast cancer screening, mammography using ’soft’ x-rays is the only scientifically proven procedure. For this examination, we use a high-tech direct digital mammography device suitable for tomosynthesis and stereotactic sampling.

During mammography, the breasts are compressed in two directions and then images are taken. Because breast compression can cause mild discomfort, screening should be performed within 15 days of the first day of menstruation. At this time, the breast tissue is softer and less sensitive. As part of our complex breast screening, mammography + a physical examination + an ultrasound examination is also performed. If necessary, 3-dimensional tomosynthesis, a thin- or thick-needle biopsy examination, and stereotactic sampling are also possible at Dr. Rose Private Hospital on the recommendation of a radiologist.

Mammography is proven to be the most effective tool for early detection of breast cancer and is recommended as a regular examination from the age of 35.

When and how often is screening recommended?
Screening in a complaint-free case is recommended every two years for women with an average risk aged over 30-35 years, and annually for high-risk women under 40 years of age.
Annual screening is recommended for women between the ages of 40 and 50 with an average risk and no symptoms or complaints.
For over 50s, screening every two years is recommended for average-risk women, and annually for high-risk women.
Mammography for women with breast implants can be performed using the ’Eklund’ examination technique.
During the pre-examination before plastic surgery, for women over 30 years of age, we also carry out complex breast screening.

During self-examination, if you feel a painless or painful lump in the breast that you have not previously noticed, or if you notice fluid or discharge from your nipple, the nipple retracts, or you notice a skin lesion in the breast area, be sure to see your doctor for further investigation. The exact age limit recommended for the examination should be determined on the basis of an individual assessment, which in each case is the competence of the radiologist.

Seek medical attention immediately for any of the above symptoms.
